About Us
Trireme Ynys Mon Rowing Club, or just Ynys Mon for short, is a sea rowing club based in Bull Bay on the North coast of Anglesey, affiliated to Welsh Sea Rowing (WSR). Some members compete at the highest level of sea rowing, having represented the club at numerous International events, whilst others prefer to row just for fun and fitness and only row recreationally. Some enjoy the challenge and excitement of the roughest of seas, whilst some stick to only the calmer of days when you can really enjoy the finesse of rowing along with the fantastic Anglesey coastline. Membership is made up of a wide range of ages, abilities, fitness and confidence, we have had people go from petrified of the sea to confident rowers in just a few months on a number of occasions.
Training and recreational rowing takes place in Bull Bay, from where we row along most of the North Coast of the island. Rowing from Bull Bay to Cemaes Bay is a regular training row for the Great River Race and other endurance events, and we also row as far round as Dulas Island on occasion. Mostly though we row in and around the Bull Bay area, with some fantastic places to stop at for a break such as the Porth Wen disused brickworks, Amlwch Port, or Llaneilian beach. We can often be seen from the main road or the viewing point car park rowing beneath the cliffs or around the island off the Octel headland – why not come and see for yourself sometime, and maybe nip down to say hello when you see us coming in?
Racing
With over 35 league-affiliated clubs, we have a busy race calendar during the Summer months. Racing takes place mostly along the West coast of Wales, each race organised by a different club.
Ynys Mon race in the Northern League but also attend races as far down the coast as Aberaeron and Aberystwyth, and occasionly we’ll head even further south for a weekend.
We also compete in several longer endurance races such as the Montford Challenge, Puffin Island Race, Castle to Castle, and the annual Great River Race in London – a 21-mile endurance race on the River Thames with more than 300 boats entering each year. The club has a history of dominated the Pembrokeshire Longboat class, as well as a number of wins in the Celtic Longboat and Teifi Skiff classes, and have even been the fastest of any boat class on a few occasions. Our club has also competed in Yole racing in Euro diffusion sculling boats, in the FISA World Rowing Coastal Championships against the best sea rowers in the world. The club’s highest place finish was achieved by Kelly Potter who came 8th in the women’s single scull event – a truly fantastic feat from such a small club.
